Does Saying “Oh Gosh” Make a person a disbeliever? (Islamic Ruling)
Question
Assalamualaikum if someone just say oh gosh ...like people use to say oh my gosh and by listening it is just come in mind and said oh gosh so does it take out of fold of Islam??
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedSaying “Oh my gosh” does not make a person a disbeliever. However, since it is used as a substitute for “Oh my God,” some scholars advise avoiding such expressions and using better alternatives.
The phrase “Oh my gosh” is commonly used in English as a mild expression of surprise. It is generally understood as a softened version of “Oh my God.”
In Islam:
- There is no clear ruling that this phrase is haram
- It does not take a person out of Islam
- However, using expressions related to Allah’s name in a casual or unnecessary way is discouraged
Because of this, scholars recommend using better and more respectful alternatives.
Better Alternatives to Use
Instead of saying “Oh my gosh,” a Muslim can say:
- SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah)
- Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)
- Astaghfirullah (I seek forgiveness from Allah)
These phrases bring reward and are more appropriate.
Scholarly Advice
Islam teaches Muslims to:
- Speak with respect
- Avoid doubtful or unnecessary expressions
- Use words that bring reward

Conclusion
Saying “Oh my gosh” is not haram and does not affect a person’s faith, but it is better to avoid such expressions and use Islamic phrases that are more meaningful and rewarding
