Using Items with Blasphemous Names

Question

Salam aleykum! I wanted to ask, is the usage of items with kufr in their name, kufr for us the user.? For example there is a perfume called "god of fire" Would we fall into kufr using such perfume. Another case would be: I plan on doing a procedure on a device i have and one of the applications/ software required to complete this process is called "godmode". (I am guessing this name is usually used by developers to show the importance or power of said application) The application itself does not contain any other forms of blasphemy apart from the name and is overall a normal piece of software. My question now is would these (similar) cases constitute kufr for us if we use these items/ goods in the case we do not believe in them, considering most of the time these are things for which no one takes their name seriously. I have asked before about this issue on other platforms and what i got was between not shirk and unsure.

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

If an item has an inappropriate or blasphemous word in its name, like “god of fire” or “godmode,” merely using that item does not constitute kufr, as long as the user does not believe in its meaning or intend to honor it.

The scholars’ principle is:

“A Muslim is not judged to be a disbeliever unless they explicitly adopt or approve kufr.”

(Al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, Al-Bahr al-Raiq)

Therefore, using such items does not make one a disbeliever.

However, since such names are inappropriate, it is better and more cautious to avoid them whenever possible.
