Question
Is income earned through Airbnb considered haram if the platform allows listings in Israeli settlements? Assalamu alaykum, I own a property in a vacation area near the beach and was planning to list it on Airbnb. However, I recently learned that Airbnb allows properties in Israeli settlements (in the occupied West Bank) to be listed on their platform. From what I understand, they had previously planned to remove those listings but later reversed the decision and now still allow them. Apparently, they say they donโt keep any of the profit from those settlement listings and donate it to humanitarian aid organisations. My concern is this: if I list my property on Airbnb, I would be paying service fees to the platform. Since Airbnb allows listings in those settlements, would earning income through Airbnb be considered haram? I am trying to understand whether this would count as directly or indirectly supporting something unjust, and whether that affects the permissibility of my income. Jazakum Allahu khayran.
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedWalekumussalam,
If a company openly supports matters connected to injustice or unlawful occupation, and your fees or business dealings indirectly strengthen that system, then avoiding such a platform is more cautious and closer to piety.
Especially when alternatives are available, it is better to stay away from doubtful matters.
