Is an E-commerce marketing job permissible in Islam?
Question
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh! I might be offered a job as marketing manager in an e-commerce company (like Amazon/Ebay). Am i allowed to organise sales and encourage the sellers on the site to sales like New Year, Black Friday, Gender holiday sales? What if job involves making videos and banners with slogans like "Take advantage of New Year" "Happy New Year" etc. Do I have to refuse that job offer? Jazak-Allah khairan
Islamic Ruling & Answer
Walekumussalam warahmatullahi wabaraktu,
Such a job as a marketing manager in an e-commerce company (like Amazon/Ebay type) is basically permissible, because buying and selling is a halal activity. Managing sales, giving offers, and encouraging sellers are also generally allowed.
However, a few things should be kept in mind:
If your job is only to organize sales, give discounts, and do general promotion, then there is no problem in it.
But if the job includes things like:
Promoting haram items (such as alcohol), or
Promoting non-Muslim religious festivals (like New Year, Christmas) in a way that shows respect or support for them, for example using slogans like âHappy New Yearâ
Then in such cases, it is better to avoid these things.
If the company allows you to use neutral words, such as:
âYear-End Saleâ
âMega Saleâ
Then there is flexibility, and you can do this job.
However, if the company forces you to use such slogans related to non-Islamic festivals or to promote haram items, then it is better to avoid this job.
