Question
I am a Catholic and my roommate is Muslim. There are no sexual relations between us. He says if I continue drinking alcohol (I am never intoxicated as I drink less than one glass of wine with dinner) he says he must move out or he will go to hell. Is this true? We have been together for 38 years and he just heard this message today at mosque. He wants me to quit or he will move out. He has Alzheimerโs disease and would not be able to live alone. I am his caregiver and he has no family or friends in this country. Must I give up alcohol in order to continue taking care of him here?
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedIn Islam, drinking alcohol is forbidden for Muslims, but it is not required for you as a non-Muslim. And he will not go to hell because of your actions everyone is responsible for their own deeds.
However, alcohol is also harmful to health, so if possible, it would be better for you to leave it. And if it is difficult to stop, then at least try not to drink in front of him, so he does not feel mentally disturbed. Especially considering his illness, dealing with him gently and wisely is the best approach.
