Is “Muhammad Aariz” an Acceptable Islamic Name?

Question

I have named my son Muhammad Aariz Rashid. The meaning I found online for Aariz is “Noble, Leader” however I am told by my relatives that Aariz has a negative connotation. They said they have confirm from various scholars and therefore have told me to change the name. Ever since my son’s birth he has had some sort of illness or infection. He is now 4.5 months old. I want to know if I should change the name or not? If yes, is Muhammad Orhan Rashid okay?

Islamic Ruling & Answer

There is no Islamic problem in naming your son Muhammad Aariz Rashid. In Arabic, the word “Aariz (عارض)” has different meanings, such as something that appears, something that comes forward, and sometimes it is also used for a cloud. It is not a word that clearly has a bad or forbidden meaning, so it is not necessary to change the name based on this reason alone.

It is also not correct to connect a child’s illness or difficulty with his name. In Islamic teachings there is no proof that a name causes illness or problems. A child’s sickness can simply be a medical issue or a normal test in life, and it should not be linked to the name.

However, if a name clearly has a bad meaning or contains shirk or inappropriate meanings, then changing it is better. But this is not proven in the case of “Aariz”, so changing the name is not necessary.

If you still wish to change the name for peace of mind, then Muhammad Orhan Rashid can also be used, as there is nothing wrong with it Islamically. However, it is generally better to choose names with clearly good meanings, such as the names of Prophets, companions, or righteous people.
