Ruling on Treating female patients in dental training

Question

I am a male Muslim student in Canada enrolled in a dental hygiene program. As part of my clinical training I am required to practice dental hygiene procedures on my female classmates and later on female patients. This involves working in and around the mouth and face area in a professional clinical setting. Additionally I may not have the option to choose a male partner to practice on as partners may be assigned to me without my choice. Is it permissible for me to work on female classmates as a student in this context and later on female patients as a qualified dental hygienist? JazakAllah Khair.

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

First of all, it should be understood that in Islam, physical contact between a non-mahram man and woman is not permissible without necessity. However, when a genuine need arises especially in the field of medical treatment there is allowance to the extent of that necessity.

In your described situation, the ruling is as follows:

If the completion of your dental hygiene program depends on practicing on female classmates, and you do not have the option to choose a male partner, then this situation falls under necessity. Therefore, at this stage, it will be permissible for you to do so to the extent required, Provided that your intention is solely education and training, and that you fully observe professional boundaries.

Similarly, when you work in the future as a dental hygienist and female patients come to you, the basic principle is that:

If a female hygienist or lady doctor is available, then it is better and more appropriate to refer the patient to her

However, if that is not possible, or the system requires you to treat the patient yourself, then it will be permissible based on the necessity of treatment

However, it is necessary to observe the following conditions:

Only look at and touch what is required to the extent of necessity

Avoid seclusion (being alone in a closed room); if possible, keep the door open or ensure someone else is present

Guard your gaze and heart

Maintain full professional conduct at all times.
