Ruling on wearing a silver ring with “Muhammad Rasulullah”
Question
Assalamwalekum... I made a silver ring that has Prophet Muhammad Peace and Blessings be upon him seal that is It's written "Allah Rasool Muhammmad". Can i wear it regularly? If and when i go to the bathroom should i remove the ring from my fingers?
Islamic Ruling & Answer
Walekumussalam,
It is permissible for a man to wear a silver ring, provided that its weight does not exceed four and a half mithqals (approximately 4.374 grams). A silver ring exceeding this weight is not permissible for a man to wear.
During the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, His ring bore the inscription “Muhammad Rasulullah”, and this ring also served as His seal. The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) made every possible effort to follow the Prophet ﷺ in all matters. Therefore, the Prophet ﷺ prohibited the Companions from making rings bearing an inscription resembling His official seal. However, the commentators of Hadith have explained that this prohibition was specific to the time of the Prophet ﷺ. Later, the use of such a ring is also reported from the Rightly Guided Caliphs (may Allah be pleased with them). Since they used it as an official seal on letters and decrees, it was permitted. Nevertheless, for an ordinary person, although making such a ring is not impermissible, it is better and more appropriate to avoid having such a ring made.
Therefore, if a man has an inscription such as “Muhammad Rasulullah” or a similar inscription engraved on a silver ring within the permissible weight limit, there is scope for him to wear it. However, since it contains the sacred name of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, he should remove it before entering the bathroom or washroom. Out of respect for the sacred names, one should avoid taking such an item into such places as far as possible. There are also narrations mentioning that the Prophet ﷺ would remove His ring before relieving Himself.
And Allah knows best.
