Female Ruler Hadees Explained

Question

I saw this Hadith โ€˜Never will succeed such a nation as makes a woman their rulerโ€™ [al Bukhari]. And I have a question . In Quran , queen of Sheba was mentioned . Does this hadith mean something else?

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

The Queen of Saba is mentioned in the Quran. It tells us that she was a ruler, she was wise, she used to consult her people, and in the end she accepted the truth through Prophet ุณู„ูŠู…ุงู† (Suleman). But the Quran does not say that female rulership is set as a religious rule. It is simply describing a historical event.

On the other hand, the hadees in Sahih al-Bukhari was said when the daughter of the Persian king was made ruler. At that time, the Prophet ๏ทบ made a general statement. Scholars explain that it refers to supreme political leadership, not to every type of responsibility or leadership.

So in the Quran mentions the Queen of Saba as a story, while the hadees explains a legal principle. Describing an event and establishing a law are two different things. That is why scholars say there is no real contradiction between them.
