Protection from shaytan by reciting Al-Baqarah's last verses

Question

Respected Mufti Saheb, Assalamu Alaikum. Regarding the Hadith in Tirmidhi (2882) which states that if the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah are recited in a house for three nights, Shaytan will not come near it: How long does Shaytan stay away after those 3 nights? Is it just for 3 days, or longer? Is it enough if one person recites it, or does everyone in the house need to read it? Please guide me in light of the Hanafi Madhhab.

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

According to the apparent meaning of the hadith reported in Tirmidhi, if the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah are recited in a house for three consecutive nights, then, by Allah’s permission, Shaytan will not come near that house. However, the hadith does not specify how long this protection continues after those three nights, so no fixed duration can be determined.

As for who should recite them, it is sufficient for one member of the household to do so, because the hadith speaks about these verses being recited in the house and does not require every individual resident to recite them.

Therefore, it is best to make the recitation of these verses a regular practice and to continue seeking Allah’s protection through supplication.
