Music Technology Degree After Reverting to Islam
Question
I am aware of a student who is currently studying Music Technology as a degree. After starting the course, the student has recently reverted to Islam, Alhumdulillah. Is it permissible to continue studying this degree? They are now aware that they should not work with instruments, so have said they will get a job as a sound engineer once the degree is complete. Is this permissible. It should be noted that there is a significant cost involved for students completing degrees with both tuition and maintenance loans having to be obtained. It is also not possible to just swap degrees and further funding may not be possible so what is the solution?
Islamic Ruling & Answer
Verifieda student was studying for a degree in Music Technology and during the course Allah granted them the guidance to accept Islam, then first of all this is a great blessing and they should thank Allah for it. After accepting Islam, it is necessary for a Muslim to try to shape their life according to the teachings of Shariah as much as possible.
1. The ruling regarding education related to music:
According to the majority of jurists, the use of musical instruments and adopting a profession connected to them is not permissible. Therefore, education or work whose main purpose is to produce or promote music should be avoided, and staying away from it is closer to precaution.
2. The current difficulty in leaving the degree:
If the student is already in the middle of the course and leaving it would result in significant financial loss, debt burden, or serious hardship, then according to some scholars it may be permissible to complete the degree out of necessity, provided that:
They do not approve of this work in their heart.
They avoid practical involvement with music as much as possible.
They do not intend to adopt this field as a profession in the future.
3. The issue of becoming a sound engineer:
If the work of a sound engineer mainly involves music and musical instruments, then such a profession should be avoided.
However, if the work related to sound is used for permissible purposes, such as:
Recording lectures or educational content
Recording Islamic talks, Qurโan recitation, or naโts
General audio technical work that does not involve music
Then in such cases, these technical skills can be used in permissible fields.
