Medical billing job and riba concern in Insurance claims

Question

Salam, i am a medical biller working for nursing home. I send claims out to insurance based on service provided to residents and how long they stayed in the facility. And post payments from insurance companies. Just like every medical institution we also deal with patients with commercial insurance. Heard from Sheikh Assim Al-Hakeem in You Tube that medical billing is halal as iam getting paid from doctor not insurance company. One thing I came across is there is state law in USA calls "Prompt pay Laws". Asper that law if the insurance doesn't process claims within set dates then they are required to pay interest to the provider facility hospital. What I understood was this is like a late fee for not processing claim within contract date. Please let me know if my job is halal or haram and if I should quit the job. Thank you.

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

If your work is limited to sending claims, handling billing, and recording payments based on the medical services provided to patients, then according to the principles of Islamic jurisprudence, this job is not inherently impermissible. This is because you are not directly involved in making interest-based contracts or determining interest; rather, you are performing an administrative and clerical service. As for the โ€œPrompt Pay Laws,โ€ under which interest may be paid due to delayed processing, the responsibility for that lies with the institutions and their contracts, not with the billing employee.

However, if the main or significant part of the job becomes calculating interest, collecting it, or directly managing interest-based transactions, then the matter becomes doubtful and caution would be better. But merely processing medical claims and billing for lawful medical services is not generally regarded by many scholars as direct โ€œassistance in riba (interest),โ€ and therefore leaving the job on this basis alone does not appear necessary.
