Is it permissible to keep the name umais or change it?

Question

Assalamualaikum Mufti Sahab my question is regarding my name my name is Umais I searched the meaning of this name online and on youtube it is said that Umais is derived from Ams which means little hard work fight darkness and this name is there on all my documents and the spelling is also wrong instead of Umais it is Umes due to which people often call me Umesh which is a Hindu name I have intended to change this name and keep a good name but at home my parents are agreeable but not from the heart my father says no mother or father wants a mistake for their child and mother thinks this I am thinking that life was going well till now, I hope that something goes wrong after changing the name. I trust in Allah, I do not believe in all these things, in such a situation what should I do, should I change the name or not, please give your valuable advice

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

If by Umais (Umays) you mean the well-known name found among some of the Companions and early Muslims, then the name itself is permissible. A well-known Companion, Umais ibn Ma'd (the father of Hazrat Asma bint Umays ุฑุถูŠ ุงู„ู„ู‡ ุนู†ู‡ุง), was also named Umais. Therefore, this name cannot be regarded as impermissible or incorrect.

If your concern is simply that the meaning of the name is unclear, or that people often mispronounce it as โ€œUmesh,โ€ then choosing another good Islamic name is permissible. However, the belief that changing oneโ€™s name will bring bad luck or cause problems is not correct. Benefit and harm are in the hands of Allah alone.
