Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP): Halal or Haram in Islam?

Question

scalp micropigmentation SMP halal or haram in Islam? I have severe hair baldness. I want to improve my overall look.

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

If SMP is done like a permanent tattoo, where ink goes deep into the skin only for beauty, then it is not allowed (haram).

The Prophet ﷺ said:

لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الْوَاشِمَاتِ وَالْمُسْتَوْشِمَاتِ

“Allah has cursed the women who do tattoos and those who get tattoos done.”

(Sahih Bukhari: 5933,

 Sahih Muslim: 2125)

The Quran also warns against unnecessary change of the body:

فَلَيُغَيِّرُنَّ خَلْقَ اللَّهِ

“They will change the creation of Allah.”

(Surah An-Nisa: 119)

When can SMP be allowed?

If SMP is done:

to cover a defect like severe baldness,

not as a permanent tattoo,

and it does not block water in wuzu or ghusl,

then some scholars allow it, because Islam allows removing or hiding defects.

The Prophet ﷺ allowed a companion to use a gold nose after losing it in battle:

(Sunan Abu Dawood: 4232)

This shows that treatment and defect correction are allowed.

IMPORTANT ADVICE:

Since SMP methods differ, you should contact a local Darul Ifta or a trusted Mufti, explain the exact procedure, and take a final ruling before doing it.
