How to Perform Wudu Step by Step (with Common Mistakes)

What Is Wudu?

Wudu is the ritual washing a Muslim performs before prayer and other acts of worship. It is a light physical cleansing with a deep spiritual meaning: a person prepares body and mind to stand before their Creator.

Step-by-Step Wudu

  1. Make the intention in your heart to perform wudu for the sake of Allah.
  2. Say Bismillah.
  3. Wash both hands up to the wrists three times.
  4. Rinse the mouth three times.
  5. Sniff water into the nose and blow it out three times.
  6. Wash the face from forehead to chin, ear to ear, three times.
  7. Wash the right arm to the elbow three times, then the left.
  8. Wipe the head once with wet hands.
  9. Wipe the inside and outside of the ears once.
  10. Wash the right foot to the ankle three times, then the left.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping the intention.
  • Washing too quickly and missing spots such as heels, elbows, or between fingers.
  • Wasting water; the Prophet's example emphasised moderation.
  • Talking about worldly matters throughout, when short du'as are encouraged.

Simple Reminders

Wudu is easier than it looks. After a few days it becomes natural. If you make a mistake, repeat only the missed step; you don't need to start over unless the sequence itself is broken.

Summary

Set an intention, follow the ten steps in order, avoid the common mistakes, and let the small ritual reset your heart before you stand for prayer.

Key Takeaways

  • Intention comes first, then Bismillah.
  • Wash face, arms, head, and feet in order.
  • Do not waste water.
  • Small errors can be corrected without starting over.
