Reciting Surah Yaseen 40 times for the deceased

The main point in this matter is that it is permissible to recite the Qur’an for the deceased and convey the reward to them. However, reciting Surah Yaseen specifically 40 times is not obligatory or necessary. There is no prescribed number in Shariah that makes the Isal-e-Sawab valid or accepted only after Surah Yaseen has been recited 40 times.

Therefore, if someone recites Surah Yaseen once, a few times, or fewer than 40 times and intends to convey the reward to the deceased, the act does not become useless or unacceptable merely because the number is less than 40. Acceptance is in the hands of Allah. Likewise, reciting it 40 times is not prohibited in itself, but it is not correct to regard 40 as a prescribed or obligatory number in Shariah.

Everyone may recite the Qur’an or Surah Yaseen individually according to their convenience and convey the reward to the deceased. It is not necessary to tell others how many times one has recited it or to keep a formal count. If people wish to complete the Qur’an together, each person may recite one Juz or as much as is easy for them, and then they may collectively make dua and convey the reward to the deceased.

Similarly, giving charity is a good deed, but it should not be considered obligatory according to any particular number or specific method. The main purpose is to pray for the deceased, seek forgiveness for them, and convey the reward of good deeds to them. There is no requirement of reciting Surah Yaseen 40 times for this purpose.

Therefore, considering the number 40 to be necessary is not correct. Reciting fewer than 40 times does not invalidate Isal-e-Sawab, and each person may recite individually and convey the reward to the deceased without informing others of the number of times they have recited.
