Backbiting: Asking Names?

Question

If a person's friend , has told him that he heard someone backbiting about him and his mother , can that person ask for their names , or should he just ask in other way , do I know them , from which neighbourhood, are they close to me . And if his friend tell him , they talked about your weight , your mother , and your personality. Can he ask for more details , for it is just enough . Thank you

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

No, in such a situation it is not necessary to find out the person’s name. Rather, it is better to end the matter there so that no resentment or discord develops in the heart.

However, if there is a genuine need (such as protecting oneself or making reform), then one may ask indirectly, for example: “Do I know him?” or “Is he someone close to me?”

Likewise, asking for further details is also not appropriate, because it disturbs the heart, and listening to backbiting is also not permissible.

Therefore, it is best to avoid asking for names and details and not to pursue the matter further.
