Delaying Prayers Due to School Is Not Permissible
Question
Assalamu Alaikum, I am a male revert hiding my Islam from my family and peers. I am starting school soon and will be away from home from approximately 7:50 AM to 5:10 PM daily. Dhuhr falls during my school hours. Asr may also fall during school or during my commute depending on the season. I do not have access to a private space to pray at school without exposing my faith, which could lead to serious consequences. Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha I can pray at home on time. Is it permissible for me to delay Dhuhr and Asr and pray them when I return home around 5:10 PM? Or is there another concession available to me given my situation? JazakAllah Khair.
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedWalekumussalam,
Prayer is the pillar of Islam and the most important obligation after faith. The hadiths strongly emphasize its importance. As long as a person is in their senses, prayer remains obligatory and is not waived under any circumstance.
Therefore, in this situation, it is not permissible to delay any prayer beyond its prescribed time due to school or studies, as education is not a valid excuse for missing prayer.
However, the person should try their best to find a suitable and private place to perform the obligatory prayer within its time, even if it has to be done briefly.
As for the Asr prayer, its time lasts until sunset. If the person reaches home and prays before sunset, the prayer will be considered on time. However, delaying Dhuhr beyond its prescribed time is not permissible.
