How to Calculate Zakat on Gold Ornaments
Question
Assalamualaikum How do We calculate zakaat on gold ornaments as the rate of gold has increase so much in the last year and especially the last month alone . Also do we pay zakaat on gold bought for my daughter for her wedding.It is in my possession for safe keeping. Jazakallah khair
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedZakat on gold is calculated on its current market price, not the old buying price.
If the gold is 87.48 grams or more and one lunar year has passed, then 2.5% Zakat must be paid.
If the gold bought for the daughter’s wedding is still owned by the father, then the father must pay Zakat.
If the gold has been given to the daughter as a gift, then Zakat is her responsibility.
