Islamic ruling on keeping dogs and earning from dog breeding
Question
Is it allowed in islam to own a dogs in farm house and earn money through the mating of male dogs like usually customer pay money for the mating with there female dog
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedAccording to Islamic jurisprudence, there are clear rulings about keeping dogs. The Hadith strongly discourages keeping a dog without a valid need. The Prophet ﷺ said that angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or pictures. Another Hadith mentions that the person who keeps a dog without need loses a portion of reward every day. Because of this, keeping dogs just as a hobby is discouraged and can deprive a person of blessings.
However, Islam allows keeping dogs when there is a genuine need, such as for hunting, guarding the house, protecting farms, or taking care of livestock. Based on this, scholars explain that the dogs which are allowed to be kept (for protection or hunting) can also be bought and sold. On the other hand, dogs that are not allowed to be kept without need should also not be traded. So the main point is need and beneficial use—if the dog is useful for these purposes, it is permissible; otherwise, it is not.
Furthermore, the Hadith forbids taking payment for the mating of a male animal (called “Asb al-Fahl”). Therefore, charging a fixed fee for mating a male dog with a female dog is not permissible. However, if someone gives a gift voluntarily without any prior condition, it is allowed, but it should not be made into a regular business.
