Mufti, Imam, Scholar & Muslim: What's the difference?

Question

What is the difference between a mufti , an imam a Muslim or any other grade and whom shalll I talk to in which context and needs ?

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

In Islam, every Muslim is honored and respected. However, people differ in terms of knowledge, responsibility, and the religious roles they fulfill. These are not spiritual ranks, but differences in expertise and responsibilities.

1. Muslim

A Muslim is anyone who believes in Allah and accepts Islam.

Every Muslim is required to learn the basic teachings and obligations of the religion.

If a Muslim has sound knowledge of a matter, they may convey it to others. However, it is not permissible to issue religious rulings (fatwas) without proper knowledge.

Allah says:

ยซ"So ask the people of knowledge if you do not know."

(Qur'an 16:43)ยป

2. Imam

An Imam is generally the person who leads the congregational prayers in the mosque.

If he is also a qualified scholar, he may teach Islam, deliver sermons, and provide general religious guidance.

However, not every Imam is a Mufti.

3. Aalim (Islamic Scholar)

An Aalim is someone who has formally studied the Islamic sciences, such as the Qur'an, Hadith, Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and Aqeedah (Islamic creed).

A scholar teaches the religion, explains the Qur'an and Sunnah, and guides people in matters of faith and practice.

However, not every scholar is a Mufti.

4. Mufti

A Mufti is a scholar who has undertaken advanced specialization in Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) and the science of issuing legal rulings (Ifta).

A Mufti's role is to derive and issue reliable Islamic legal rulings based on the Qur'an, the Sunnah, scholarly consensus (Ijma'), analogical reasoning (Qiyas), and established principles of Islamic jurisprudence.

Complex issues such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, financial transactions, and difficult questions related to worship should be referred to a qualified Mufti.

5. Qadi (Islamic Judge)

A Qadi is an Islamic judge.

Unlike a Mufti, who gives legal opinions (fatwas), a Qadi hears disputes between parties and issues binding judicial decisions.

Today, formal Islamic courts do not exist in many countries.

Whom should you consult?

- For basic Islamic knowledge, prayer, learning the Qur'an, and moral advice: Consult a trustworthy Imam or Islamic scholar.

- For complex legal issues (such as divorce, marriage, inheritance, business transactions, oaths, vows, etc.): Consult a qualified Mufti.

- For learning Qur'anic recitation or Tajweed: Consult a qualified Qur'an or Tajweed teacher.

- For spiritual advice and self-reform: Consult a knowledgeable and righteous scholar who adheres to the Qur'an and Sunnah.

- For physical illnesses: Consult a medical doctor.

- For mental health concerns: Consult a qualified psychologist or psychiatrist, while also seeking appropriate religious guidance if needed.

An Important Principle

In Islam, no one is infallible except the Prophets (peace be upon them). Therefore, if the statement of any scholar, Imam, or Mufti appears to clearly contradict the Qur'an, the authentic Sunnah, or established principles of Islamic scholarship, it is permissible to respectfully ask for the evidence behind that opinion. The ultimate authority belongs to Allah and His Messenger ๏ทบ.
