Reconciling the two weighty things hadiths
Question
As salaam alaikum. I heard in Hadith that on the Prophets (pbuh) farewell pilgrimage he said I leave behind two weighty things Quran and Sunnah. But then a few days later at Khum he delivered a sermon saying I leave behind two weighty things the Quran and my family (repeated 3 times I remind you of the rights of my family). Per sahih Muslim. I was wondering how we reconcile there two hadiths as they seem contradictory and were said a few days apart.
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedWalekumussalam,
The question refers to two well-known narrations, both of which are authentic in their respective contexts. There is no real contradiction between them.
The First Hadith: โI leave behind the Qur'an and my Sunnahโ
Its well-known wording is:
โI have left among you two matters. You will never go astray as long as you hold firmly to them: the Book of Allah and my Sunnah.โ
This narration is reported in Al-Muwatta with a mursal chain and is also narrated through other chains in Al-Mustadrak and other collections. Although some individual chains have been criticized, many scholarsโsuch as Ibn 'Abd al-Barr and Shaykh al-Albani considered it authentic or at least acceptable due to its supporting narrations.
The Second Hadith: The Hadith of Ghadir Khumm (Sahih Muslim)
In Sahih Muslim, Zayd ibn Arqam (ุฑุถู ุงููู ุนูู) narrates that the Prophet ๏ทบ said at Ghadir Khumm:
โO people! I am only a human being, and soon the messenger of my Lord will come to me and I shall respond. I am leaving among you two weighty things. The first of them is the Book of Allah... Then he said: 'And my Ahl al-Bayt (my family). I remind you by Allah regarding my Ahl al-Bayt. I remind you by Allah regarding my Ahl al-Bayt. I remind you by Allah regarding my Ahl al-Bayt.'โ
Reconciling :
There is no contradiction between these two narrations because they address different matters.
1. The narration mentioning "the Book of Allah and my Sunnah" identifies the two primary sources of religious guidance. It teaches that Muslims must adhere to the Qur'an and the Sunnah in order to remain rightly guided.
2. In the Hadith of Ghadir Khumm, the Prophet ๏ทบ first instructed the Muslims to hold firmly to the Book of Allah. He then repeatedly emphasized the rights of his Ahl al-Bayt, urging the Ummah to honor them, love them, and not neglect or wrong them.
He did not say that his family should be taken as an independent source of legislation alongside the Qur'an. Rather, he repeatedly said:
โI remind you of your duty towards my Ahl al-Bayt.โ
This is an exhortation to fulfill their rights and treat them with respect.
For this reason, Imam al-Nawawi, in his commentary on Sahih Muslim, explained that this hadith emphasizes the virtue of the Ahl al-Bayt, the obligation to love them, honor them, and safeguard their rights. It does not mean that every statement of every member of the Prophet's family is, by itself, a binding source of Islamic law.
The belief of Ahl al-Sunnah wa'l-Jama'ah is to adhere to the Qur'an and the Sunnah, while also loving and honoring the Ahl al-Bayt and respecting all the noble Companions (ุฑุถู ุงููู ุนููู ุฃุฌู ุนูู). These principles are fully harmonious and do not conflict with one another.
