Islamic guidance on anger

Question

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, Mufti Sahib. I wanted to ask for advice regarding my anger. I struggle a lot with controlling it. When I become angry, I sometimes say things in the heat of the moment that I later deeply regret. I genuinely try to control myself, but I feel like I keep failing. I also worry that because of my anger and the things I say in rage, my ibadah and efforts to become a better Muslim may become worthless. Sometimes I even feel that anger is something I have inherited and that my genes dominate me, although I sincerely want to change. Could you please guide me, in the light of the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah, on how I can control my anger and what I should do when I feel myself becoming angry? Also, if I hurt someone with my words while angry, what should I do Islamically to make amends? I would really appreciate practical guidance and any authentic duas or adhkar that I can recite to help me overcome this. JazakAllahu khayran.

Feeling anger is part of human nature, but Islam teaches us to control our anger. The Prophet ﷺ said:

«لَيْسَ الشَّدِيدُ بِالصُّرَعَةِ، إِنَّمَا الشَّدِيدُ الَّذِي يَمْلِكُ نَفْسَهُ عِنْدَ الْغَضَبِ

“The strong person is not the one who defeats others in wrestling; rather, the truly strong person is the one who controls himself when angry.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, 6114; Sahih Muslim, 2609)

Therefore, do not consider yourself helpless merely because anger may be natural or influenced by genetics. Rather, continue making a sincere effort to control it. When you become angry, recite A‘udhu billahi min ash-shaytanir-rajim, remain silent, step away from the argument, and if you are standing, sit down; and if you are sitting, lie down.

If you hurt someone with your words while angry, seek forgiveness from Allah, apologize to the person you hurt, and, where possible, make amends for the hurt you caused. You should not consider your worship worthless merely because of your anger; rather, continue striving to improve yourself.

Recite the following verse:

يَا نَارُ كُونِي بَرْدًا وَسَلَامًا عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ

“ O fire! Be coolness and safety upon Ibrahim.”

(Surah al-Anbiya, 21:69)

May Allah grant you the ability to control your anger, develop a gentle temperament, and continue progressing in your worship and character. Aameen.
