Islamic guidelines for childrenโs clothing
Question
In Islam is it haram for parents to force their kids into wearing dresses all the time and not let them wear loose clothing that does not show body parents?
Islamic Ruling & Answer
The basic principle regarding clothing in Islam is that clothing should cover the awrah, be modest, and not reveal the shape or contours of the body. Clothing that is very tight and clearly shows the shape of the body, or is so thin that the body becomes visible, is not permissible according to Shariah, whether it is worn by a man or a woman.
On the other hand, if clothing is loose-fitting, properly covers the body, and does not reveal the shape or contours of the body, it cannot be considered impermissible merely because it is not a shalwar, pajama, or any particular style of clothing. Shariah has not prescribed one specific design or style of clothing; rather, what matters is that the clothing complies with the general principles of Shariah.
As for parents requiring their children to wear a particular type of clothing, parents have the right to raise their children and teach them to become accustomed to modest and Shariah-compliant clothing. In fact, once children become old enough to understand, parents should protect them from impermissible clothing so that they develop the habit of wearing appropriate clothing from childhood.
Therefore, if parents make their children wear clothing that complies with the limits of Shariah, there is nothing wrong with this. However, if a child wishes to wear loose and modest clothing that is permissible according to Shariah, it is not correct to declare it impermissible merely because the parents prefer a different style. Parents may, of course, guide their children in choosing appropriate clothing based on their upbringing and what they consider beneficial for them.
And Allah knows best.
