Prayer at the Masjid

Walekumussalam,

The obligatory (Fard) prayer itself is individually obligatory upon every adult Muslim. However, there is a strong emphasis for men to perform the prayer in congregation. According to Hanafi jurisprudence, praying in congregation for men is Sunnah Mu’akkadah (an emphasized Sunnah), whose status is very close to being obligatory. Deliberately and habitually abandoning the congregation without a valid excuse is sinful. Some Hanafi jurists have also classified praying in congregation as Wajib (obligatory).

However, it would not be correct to say that every Fard prayer must necessarily be performed in the masjid as an individual obligation (Fard ‘Ayn). In Hanafi jurisprudence, the primary emphasis is on praying in congregation. If a person is unable to go to the masjid due to a valid Shariah excuse, he may pray in congregation at home or elsewhere. Nevertheless, praying in congregation in the masjid is more virtuous and carries greater reward.

Regarding the virtue of congregation, the Prophet ﷺ said that prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times more virtuous than prayer performed individually. (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

Likewise, it is narrated in Sahih Muslim that a blind Companion رضي الله عنه asked the Prophet ﷺ for permission to pray at home. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, “Do you hear the call to prayer?” He replied, “Yes.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Then respond to it.”

Therefore, the summary is that a man should avoid missing the congregation without a valid excuse and should make every effort to pray in congregation at the masjid. However, if he prays individually instead of in congregation, the Fard prayer itself is valid and fulfilled; nevertheless, deliberately abandoning the congregation without a valid excuse is something for which a person may be accountable before Allah, particularly if he makes it a habitual practice.
