Smelling perfume while fasting

In the situation described, merely smelling perfume, an alcohol-based disinfectant, wet wipes, or similar substances through normal breathing does not invalidate the fast, because simply perceiving a fragrance is not considered eating or drinking. Likewise, if smelling a fragrance or chemical causes its taste to be perceived in the mouth, this alone does not invalidate the fast, as long as no physical substance is deliberately caused to reach the throat through the mouth or nose.

Using perfume or smelling ordinary fragrances while fasting is not prohibited in itself. However, one should avoid deliberately inhaling sprays, smoke, or vapors deeply in such a manner that their fine material particles reach the throat, because deliberately causing physical particles to reach the throat is different from merely perceiving a smell.

Therefore, according to your description, since you did not apply any of these substances to your mouth or lips, but merely smelled them and consequently perceived their taste in your mouth, your fast is valid and no make-up fast (qada) is required. Similarly, using wet wipes to clean your hands does not invalidate the fast, provided that no physical substance from them enters the mouth and is not swallowed.

Therefore, you should not doubt the validity of your fast merely because you smelled something or perceived a taste in your mouth. However, as a precaution, it is better to avoid deliberately smelling chemicals or sprays from very close range without a need.
