Ruling on missed ramadan fasts due to menstruation
Question
I could not fast, which I missed due to my monthly cycle. My husband paid Fidya in previous years(10 Years). I want to confirm if I have to fast or not.
Islamic Ruling & Answer
The fasts of Ramadan that are missed due to menstruation (ḥayḍ) must be made up (qaḍā'). Paying fidya does not discharge this obligation, because menstruation is a temporary excuse, not a permanent inability.
Therefore, if your husband paid fidya over the past ten years for the fasts you missed due to menstruation, this did not remove the obligation of making up those fasts. You are still required to observe the qaḍā' of all those missed fasts, and you may complete them gradually according to your ability.
However, if a person is elderly or has a permanent illness with no hope of ever being able to fast again, then fidya is prescribed for such a person. In contrast, for fasts missed due to menstruation, only qaḍā' is required; fidya is not sufficient.
