Question
Is it permissible to celebrate one’s birthday according to the coran and Islam?
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedThere is no evidence in the Qur’an or authentic Sunnah that the Prophet ﷺ, his Companions (رضي الله عنهم), the Tābiʿīn, or the early generations of Muslims ever celebrated their birthdays as an annual event. Therefore, celebrating birthdays as a recurring religious or festive occasion is not established in Islam.
Evidence from the Qur’an
Allah Almighty says:
«﴿ٱلۡيَوۡمَ أَكۡمَلۡتُ لَكُمۡ دِينَكُمۡ وَأَتۡمَمۡتُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ نِعۡمَتِي﴾
“Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and approved Islam as your religion.”
(Surah al-Mā’idah 5:3)»
Since the religion has been perfected, it is not permissible to introduce new acts of worship or religious festivals without evidence from the Qur’an or the Sunnah.
Allah Almighty also says:
«﴿لَئِن شَكَرۡتُمۡ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمۡ﴾
“If you are grateful, I will surely increase you.”
(Surah Ibrāhīm 14:7)»
This verse encourages gratitude to Allah at all times, rather than instituting a specific annual birthday celebration.
Evidence from the Authentic Sunnah
The Prophet ﷺ said:
««مَنْ أَحْدَثَ فِي أَمْرِنَا هَذَا مَا لَيْسَ مِنْهُ فَهُوَ رَدٌّ»
“Whoever introduces into this matter of ours (Islam) something that is not from it, it will be rejected.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 2697; Sahih Muslim 1718)»
The Prophet ﷺ also said:
««مَنْ تَشَبَّهَ بِقَوْمٍ فَهُوَ مِنْهُمْ»
“Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd 4031 – Hasan)»
When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he found the people celebrating two annual festivals. He said:
«"Allah has replaced them with two better days: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha."
(Sunan Abī Dāwūd 1134 – Authentic)»
This hadith demonstrates that Islam has prescribed its own annual festivals for Muslims.
What if a Person Wishes to Thank Allah?
If a person thanks Allah for the blessing of life, repents, makes duʿā’, gives charity, or reflects upon his deeds, while not believing that Islam has prescribed the celebration of birthdays, then these actions are inherently righteous and rewarding.
However, turning one's birthday into an annual celebration with special customs and rituals, or considering it a religious practice, has no basis in the Qur’an or the authentic Sunnah.
