Is Listening to Music Without Haram Lyrics Allowed? Is Arabic Music Halal or Haram? (Islamic Ruling Explained)

Question

Can I listen to music as long as it doesn't have any haram lyrics or anything against religion, and has no haram instruments like load beats. Also, is arabic music halal or haram?

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

According to the majority of Islamic scholars, the ruling on music is not based only on whether the lyrics are clean. Musical instruments are also considered in the ruling. Arabic music is not automatically halal simply because it is in Arabic.

Many scholars have understood from the Quran and Hadith that musical instruments (except the duff in specific cases) are generally not permissible. Therefore, even if a song does not contain vulgar, anti-religious, or inappropriate lyrics, the use of musical instruments may still affect its ruling.

Clean lyrics alone do not necessarily make all music permissible. The ruling also depends on:

  • The content of the lyrics
  • The instruments used
  • The overall effect of the content

Arabic music follows the same principles. Simply being in the Arabic language does not make something halal or haram. If it contains impermissible elements, then the same ruling applies.

Hadith Reference

The Prophet ๏ทบ said:

โ€œThere will be among my Ummah people who will regard as lawful zina, silk (for men), alcohol, and musical instruments.โ€

(Sahih al-Bukhari โ€“ Muโ€˜allaq, authenticated by Ibn Hajar)

Conclusion

According to the majority of scholars, instrumental music is generally not considered permissible even if the lyrics are clean. Arabic music is judged by its content and form, not by its language. A Muslim should choose content that benefits faith and avoids doubtful matters.
