Is there a sunnah order for cutting nails?
Question
Which finger should one start cutting the nails from, according to the Sunnah, and which finger should one finish with? Is there a specific order of fingers that is Sunnah to follow when cutting one's nails?
Islamic Ruling & Answer
With regard to the question, it should be noted that no specific order of cutting the fingernails has been established from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ through an authentic Hadith. Therefore, it is not correct to regard any particular order as an established Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
However, the jurists have mentioned a recommended method of cutting the nails. According to this method, one should begin with the index finger of the right hand and proceed towards the little finger. Then, one should begin with the little finger of the left hand and proceed towards the thumb. After that, the thumb of the right hand should be cut.
As for the toenails, one should begin with the little toe of the right foot and proceed towards the big toe. Then, one should begin with the big toe of the left foot and proceed towards the little toe.
Following this order is preferable in consideration of the general Islamic principle of beginning with the right side. However, it should not be regarded as an established Sunnah or an obligatory practice. There is no harm if someone cuts their nails in a different order.
And Allah knows best.
