The reality of magic in islam

Before answering this question, it is important to understand the reality of magic (sihr), as doing so removes many misunderstandings. In reality, magic is a real phenomenon whose effects may appear on the human body by the permission of Allah. Just as fire burns, water cools, and natural causes can result in fever, pain, or other physical illnesses, magic may also affect a person's body and life by Allah's permission. This has nothing to do with the strength or weakness of one's faith, as even the Prophet ﷺ was affected by magic. However, regularly reciting al-Mu'awwidhatayn (Surah al-Falaq and Surah al-Nas) and other authentic supplications and adhkar is, by Allah's permission, a means of protection. If Allah has decreed that a person will be tested through magic or any other worldly cause, then that trial may still occur according to His wisdom.

However, the belief that a person can use magic to send their soul into another person's body, take control of them, or leave their own body and wander freely is not established by the Qur'an, the Sunnah, or any reliable Islamic evidence.

If there is concern about magic or its effects, the Shari'ah teaches us to seek Allah's protection through authentic supplications. In this regard, it is narrated from Ka'b al-Ahbar (رحمه الله) that he used to say:

«أعوذ بوجه الله العظيم الذي ليس شيء أعظم منه، وبكلمات الله التامات التي لا يجاوزهن بر ولا فاجر، وبأسماء الله الحسنى كلها ما علمت منها وما لم أعلم، من شر ما خلق وذرأ وبرأ.»

This narration shows that the proper way to seek protection from magic and other evils is to seek refuge in Allah, His perfect words, and His beautiful names.

Therefore, if you have strong reason to believe that your mother has been affected by magic or another harmful influence, then recite Surah al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq, and Surah al-Nas over her regularly, observe the authentic morning and evening adhkar, and sincerely ask Allah to grant her healing. It is also permissible to consult a trustworthy scholar who performs ruqyah according to the Qur'an and Sunnah, so that it can be determined whether the condition is due to magic or a physical or psychological illness.
