Ghusl and doubt after waking up

Question

Salam Aleykoum. I have a question: do we need to take a shower after sleepingโ€”just in case some fluid was discharged without us realizing it, even if there is no visible trace of fluid on our underwear upon waking? Or should we take a shower anyway to avoid any potential risk? Barak Allahu feek.

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

Merely because of the possibility that some fluid may have been discharged during sleep, while upon waking there is no trace of semen on the body or clothing and there is no certainty that semen was discharged, ghusl is not obligatory.

According to the Hanafi school of jurisprudence, ghusl becomes obligatory only when the discharge of semen is established with certainty or there is a clear sign indicating that it occurred. Mere doubt, suspicion, or precaution alone does not make ghusl obligatory, because Islamic rulings regarding acts of worship are based on certainty, not on mere possibilities.

Therefore, in the situation described, it is not necessary to perform ghusl simply to avoid a possible risk. However, if upon waking semen is definitely found, or there is a clear indication that semen was discharged, then ghusl becomes obligatory.
