Ruling on the name "Meerum"

Question

Salam. My question is that a year ago اللہ blessed me with a daughter. I named her "Meerum Fatimah". Days went by, now that my daughter is 1years old. I started to feel that Meerum is not an islamic name. Can you please guide me if naming a girl "Meerum" is right or wrong in ISLAM. I named her after searching for days. But Meerum's meaning were also good. Her name means "A gift from paradise/ Flower Bouquet". Can you please guide me if naming my daughter Meerum is okay according to islam.

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

If the situation is exactly as you have described, then the name "Meerum" does not have a well-known or reliably established origin or meaning in recognized Arabic dictionaries. Although various meanings are mentioned on the internet, there is no clear, authoritative linguistic basis for those meanings.

For this reason, it is preferable to choose names that are well-known, authentic, and have established good meanings, such as the names of the Prophets, the Companions, the female Companions, the Mothers of the Believers, or other righteous men and women, or names whose good meanings are confirmed by reliable linguistic sources.

Therefore, if it is possible for you, it would be better to change your daughter's name to a well-known and authentic Islamic name. For example, alongside Fatimah, you may choose names such as Maryam, Zaynab, A'ishah, Hafsah, or Khadijah. May Allah bless your daughter with goodness in this world and the Hereafter. Ameen.
