Using Symbols and Their Origins

Question

Salam, can we use symbols to show different meaning . Like doe symbolises purity in many cultures and so do many things . If yes , do we have to search deep to know if it's origin is not from something haram.

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

If something is used merely as a symbol to convey a good or general meaning, and it does not imply support for any false belief, religious ritual, or prohibited practice, then in principle there is room for it.

However, in normal circumstances it is not necessary to deeply investigate the origin of every symbol. But if it becomes clearly known that a particular symbol is specifically associated with a false religion, a polytheistic belief, or a prohibited ritual, then it is better to avoid using it.
