Islamic Ruling & Answer

1. What is the ruling on Buddhism according to the Qur'an?

The Qur'an does not explicitly mention Buddhism or Gautama Buddha. Therefore, we cannot make claims that are not established by the Qur'an or authentic Sunnah.

Allah Almighty says:

â€œAnd We certainly sent into every nation a messenger.”

ī´ŋŲˆŲŽŲ„ŲŽŲ‚ŲŽØ¯Ų’ بŲŽØšŲŽØĢŲ’Ų†ŲŽØ§ ؁ؐ؊ ŲƒŲŲ„Ų‘Ų ØŖŲŲ…Ų‘ŲŽØŠŲ ØąŲ‘ŲŽØŗŲŲˆŲ„Ų‹Ø§ī´ž

(Surah An-Nahl: 36)

And He also says:

â€œAnd there are messengers whose stories We have not related to you.”

ī´ŋŲˆŲŽØąŲØŗŲŲ„Ų‹Ø§ Ų„Ų‘ŲŽŲ…Ų’ Ų†ŲŽŲ‚Ų’ØĩŲØĩŲ’Ų‡ŲŲ…Ų’ ØšŲŽŲ„ŲŽŲŠŲ’ŲƒŲŽī´ž

(Surah An-Nisa: 164)

These verses indicate that Allah sent messengers to every nation, although the Qur'an does not mention all of them by name.

Based on these verses, some scholars have considered it possible that a prophet was sent to ancient India or nearby regions. However, there is no authentic Islamic evidence proving that Gautama Buddha himself was a prophet. Therefore, we can neither affirm this nor categorically deny it.

2. Is there any report of a prophet meeting Buddhists?

No.

Neither the Qur'an, authentic Hadith, nor reliable Islamic historical sources mention any prophet meeting or speaking with followers of Buddhism.

Therefore, it is not correct to make such a claim without evidence.

3. Are Buddhists included among the monotheists or the People of the Book mentioned in the Qur'an?

The Qur'an uses the term "People of the Book" (Ahl al-Kitab) primarily for the Jews and Christians.

It does not identify Buddhists as People of the Book, nor does it mention them by name.

As for monotheism, most forms of present-day Buddhism do not have belief in one Creator God as a central doctrine. Instead, they generally emphasize concepts such as Nirvana, Karma, and Rebirth (Reincarnation).

For this reason, Buddhism in its present form is not regarded in Islam as a monotheistic religion.

However, if an individual Buddhist personally believes in one Creator God, then that person's individual belief is a separate matter. Nevertheless, based on the established doctrines of Buddhism as a religion, Islam does not classify it as a monotheistic faith.

4. Should Buddhists also be invited to Islam?

Yes.

The message of Islam is for all of humanity.

Allah Almighty says:

â€œAnd We have not sent you except as a bearer of good news and a warner to all mankind.”

ī´ŋŲˆŲŽŲ…ŲŽØ§ ØŖŲŽØąŲ’ØŗŲŽŲ„Ų’Ų†ŲŽØ§ŲƒŲŽ ØĨŲŲ„Ų‘ŲŽØ§ ŲƒŲŽØ§ŲŲ‘ŲŽØŠŲ‹ Ų„Ų‘ŲŲ„Ų†Ų‘ŲŽØ§ØŗŲī´ž

(Surah Saba': 28)

Therefore, followers of Buddhism, like all other non-Muslims, should be invited to Islam with wisdom, good character, and kind speech.
