Islam and fictional false beliefs

Question

Assalamualaikum May Allah bless you I want to ask is it a major sin and haram to read fiction that has shirk, idolatry, little of occult references?. It's purely fictional and the reader doesn't believe in any of it. Jazakallah khair

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

This is true that the reader does not believe in such ideas. However, it is better to avoid reading fictional stories, novels, or watching dramas that contain shirk (associating partners with Allah), idol worship, magic, or other false beliefs, especially when such themes are promoted or prominently featured.

The reason is that an ordinary person may not always be able to distinguish between what is merely fictional and what is based on a corrupt belief. Sometimes a person may be influenced by a statement or concept and unconsciously begin to regard it as correct, or at least develop doubts regarding the matter. Therefore, in order to safeguard one's faith and beliefs, it is more prudent and cautious to avoid such content.
