Question
My name is ateequnissa I have 20 tola of gold and 2 daughters aged 17 & 18 the gold is for me and for my daughters marriage.. Till date I have paid zakat of the above gold. Now I can't afford to pay zakat, can I distribute the gold among us, which will be approx less than 7 tola each. So that myself and my daughters are exempted from zakat.
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedIf you still own 20 tola of gold, then simply saying “I can’t afford it now” does not cancel zakat. You are still above the nisab, so zakat remains obligatory on you.
However, if you have debts and after subtracting those debts your total wealth becomes less than the nisab, then zakat will not be obligatory.
If you truly gift the gold to your daughters and make them real owners (not just dividing it on paper), and each one receives less than nisab, then zakat will not be due. But doing this only to avoid zakat is not the right intention.
The better option is to sell a small portion of the gold and pay the zakat, because zakat is an obligation from Allah and there is blessing in fulfilling it.
May Allah ease your difficulties, grant you halal sustenance, and put barakah in your wealth and your daughters’ future.
