Question
Can one be Muslim without making prayers?
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedPrayer (Ṣalāh) is not just one of the many acts of worship in Islam—it is the greatest practical pillar of Islam after the testimony of faith (Shahādah). Every adult, sane Muslim is obligated to perform the five daily prayers.
Allah says:
«"Indeed, prayer has been prescribed upon the believers at fixed times."
(Qur'an 4:103)»
He also says:
«"Establish prayer and do not be among those who associate partners with Allah."
(Qur'an 30:31)»
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«"Between a man and shirk and disbelief is abandoning the prayer."
(Sahih Muslim, 82)»
He also said:
«"The covenant between us and them is the prayer; whoever abandons it has committed disbelief."
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi, 2621; Sunan al-Nasa'i, 463)»
Does Missing Prayer Make Someone a Non-Muslim?
This issue has been discussed by the scholars of Islam.
The majority of scholars—including the Hanafi, Maliki, and Shafi'i schools—hold that a person who neglects prayer out of laziness, while still believing it is obligatory, does not leave Islam. However, he is committing one of the gravest major sins and is in great danger of Allah's punishment.
On the other hand, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal and a number of other scholars held that deliberately abandoning the prayer altogether is an act of disbelief (kufr) based on the apparent meaning of the authentic hadith.
Therefore, there is a well-known difference of opinion among the scholars, but all of them agree that abandoning prayer is an extremely serious matter and one of the greatest sins in Islam.
What if Someone Denies That Prayer Is Obligatory?
If a person knowingly denies that the five daily prayers are obligatory, despite the clear evidence of the Qur'an and Sunnah, then he leaves Islam by consensus because he has rejected something that is known by necessity in the religion.
A Muslim should never feel safe while abandoning prayer. Whether according to the majority view or the opinion that regards it as disbelief, the result is extremely dangerous.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«"The first deed for which a servant will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection is the prayer. If it is sound, then the rest of his deeds will be sound; and if it is corrupt, then the rest of his deeds will be corrupt."
(Al-Tabarani; authenticated by many scholars as hasan due to supporting narrations.)»
Every Muslim who has fallen short should sincerely repent to Allah and begin performing the five daily prayers without delay. Allah accepts the repentance of those who return to Him with sincerity.
