Can Muslims Study the Qur'an in Depth on Their Own?

Question

Assalamualaikum If a person while studying literature, is studying the chapters in full detail , like searching up the meaning of names and words , timeline etc , and just going deep just because it interests him. Is it sinful . And can we study the quran like this . On our own .

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

Studying literature or any other field in depth out of interest is not sinful; rather, seeking knowledge is a good thing. Likewise, the Qur’an can also be studied in this way. However, it is better to refer to reliable tafsir (commentaries) and the guidance of scholars so that no misunderstanding occurs in its meaning.
