Is Fashion Designing Halal or Haram in Islam?
Question
Assalamualaikum What are rules about fashion designing . If someone wants to be a fashion designer, can she / he make dresses that are not fully covering but covering the awrah needed to be covered in front of mahrams. Can he /she sell it , if yes , so even if he/she might know , that the person buying will not use it in his/her home and will wear it outside . If a non muslim friend of mine , is into fashion designing , can I send my friend, sewing, drawing tips etc
Islamic Ruling & Answer
Walekumussalam,
Compliance of clothing with Shariah: If a piece of clothing fulfills the woman’s Shariah-required covering (awrah), meaning the necessary modesty in front of mahrams is maintained, then making or designing it is not inherently forbidden.
Selling issue: If the designer knows that the buyer will wear it outside the home and it will be used for non-Shariah-compliant purposes, then selling it is not considered permissible, because it facilitates an un-Islamic act.
Teaching a non-Muslim friend: If your non-Muslim friend is interested in fashion designing, it is permissible to give them only technical advice—like sewing, designing, or drawing tips. However, giving advice or methods that involve violating Shariah limits is not permissible.
