Is wudu valid with vaseline?

Question

Assalamu Alaikum, What should a person do if their hands sometimes become so dry that they need to apply Vaseline especially after washing the hands right away to prevent them from becoming painful, but they also frequently lose their wudu and therefore cannot remove the Vaseline every time they need to perform wudu again? JazakAllahu Khairan.

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

With regard to the question, applying Vaseline to the hands to prevent dryness and pain is permissible. It is not necessary to completely remove the Vaseline with soap every time one performs wudu.

According to Hanafi jurisprudence, if only a greasy residue remains after applying Vaseline and water can reach the skin, wudu will be valid. However, if there is a thick layer of Vaseline that prevents water from reaching the skin, it is necessary to remove it before performing wudu.

Therefore, the person in question may use Vaseline as needed. While performing wudu, they should pour water over their hands and rub them properly to ensure that water reaches the skin. In this way, there is no need to remove the Vaseline completely with soap every time.

And Allah knows best.
