What to do if wudu breaks during prayer?
Question
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, What should a person do if their wudu breaks during salah, but they cannot leave to perform wudu again because the rows of people are completely full all the way to the wall, leaving no room to exit? What should they do in that situation? Would there be a diffrence if it is jummah prayer or the 5 normal prayers that can be prayed on his own later? If they remain seated and wait, they will miss the Jummah prayer. JazakAllahu khairan.
Islamic Ruling & Answer
Walekumussalam warahmatullahi wabaraktuh,
In the situation described, if a person's wudu breaks during salah and there is no way to exit because the rows are completely full, they should sit down where they are, wait until the prayer has ended, then perform wudu and repeat the prayer. If there is a way to leave the rows, they should leave the prayer and go to perform wudu. It is not permissible to continue the prayer after one's wudu has broken.
Ruling regarding the five daily prayers: The person must perform wudu and repeat the prayer. If the prayer time has not yet ended, they should perform it within its prescribed time; otherwise, they must make it up (qada).
Ruling regarding Jumu'ah prayer: If the person can perform wudu and return in time to join the Jumu'ah congregation at the same mosque, they should join the congregation. If the Jumu'ah congregation at that mosque has finished, but it is possible to attend the Jumu'ah congregation at another mosque, they should pray Jumu'ah there. If joining a Jumu'ah congregation anywhere is no longer possible, they should perform four rak'ahs of Zuhr prayer, because Jumu'ah cannot be performed individually.
Therefore, it is not permissible to continue praying without wudu merely out of fear of missing Jumu'ah. If there is genuinely no way to exit, the person should sit where they are and wait until the congregation has finished. They should then perform wudu and pray according to the details explained above.
And Allah knows best.
