Can Pets Be Given Islamic Names?

Question

Assalamualaikum, Can we name our pets , names related to islam . Ex : Islam , Quran , hadith , salah , Jannah , Iman , Dua , wudhu etc Or names that are negative , like pride , sin , greed etc And what about making fun of animals but not having an intention of mocking them . If one , when he/she finds an animal cute , and insults the animal , like "how fat , you are" "i will eat you and your family" , "you stupid , lazy monkey" but in a loving way but facial expression might say otherwise but intention is different.

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Walekumussalam,

(1) Giving sacred Islamic names (like Islam, Quran, Hadith, Jannah, Iman, Dua, etc.) to pets is not appropriate, because these names have religious respect and dignity. It is better to avoid them to prevent any disrespect.

(2) Giving negative names (like Sin, Pride, Greed, etc.) is also not suitable, as Islam teaches us to choose good and meaningful names.

(3) Loving jokes with animals are not sinful if there is no intention of insult or harm, but it is better to use kind and polite words. Speech affects character.

Choose respectful and positive names for pets, and speak gently with them.
