Islamic Ruling & Answer
Walekumussalam,
It should be clearly understood that drawing or creating the image of any living being is prohibited (ḥarām) and is regarded as a major sin (kabīrah). This ruling applies regardless of the method used—whether the image is drawn on paper, cloth, walls, or any other surface, whether it is made by hand with a pen or pencil, captured with a camera, or created using a mobile phone. All such images of living beings are impermissible.
However, drawing images of non-living objects, such as trees, mountains, rivers, buildings, and similar things, is permissible.
The prohibition of making images is established by numerous authentic narrations of the Prophet ﷺ.
Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ states:
"عن عبد الله بن مسعود قال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «أشد الناس عذاباً عند الله المصورون."
Translation: ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd (RA) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “The people who will receive the severest punishment from Allah are the image-makers.”
It also states:
"عن ابن عباس قال: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: «كل مصور في النار يجعل له بكل صورة صورها نفسا فيعذبه في جهنم."
Translation: Ibn ʿAbbās (RA) reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “Every image-maker will be in the Fire. For every image that he made, a living being will be created, and it will punish him in Hell.”
It also states:
"وعن عائشة عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «أشد الناس عذاباً يوم القيامة الذين يضاهون بخلق الله."
Translation: ʿĀʾishah (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “On the Day of Resurrection, the people who will receive the severest punishment are those who imitate the creation of Allah.”
