Question
Salam, I have been blessed with a son alhamdulillah and was wanting to keep his name Ziyaad. Is this permissible? A few family members have said the name isn't allowed due to its resemblance with Ubayd Allah Ibn Ziyaad so I wasn't sure. Jzk for your help
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedWalekumussalam,
Congratulations! May Allah make your son righteous..
The name “Ziyaad” is completely permissible. It has a good meaning, and several companions (Sahabah) also had this name, such as Ziyad ibn Abihi.
As for the confusion because of Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, it has no basis; because mere resemblance to the name of a bad man does not make a name impermissibe.
