Can a Muslim Woman Obtain a Boat or Pilot License?

Question

Is it permissible for a Muslim woman to pass her boat driver license ? Her plane driver license ?

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

The basic ruling is that Islam does not prohibit a woman from learning permissible and beneficial skills, provided they do not involve anything contrary to the SharÄĢĘŋah. Therefore, obtaining a boat driver's license or a pilot's license is not inherently impermissible, as these are permissible skills in themselves.

However, this is subject to the following conditions:

- The rules of á¸Ĩijāb, modesty, and Islamic conduct must be observed during training and education.

- Unnecessary free mixing, seclusion (khalwah), or other prohibited interactions with non-maá¸Ĩram men must be avoided.

- Clothing that contradicts the teachings of the SharÄĢĘŋah must not be worn.

- These skills must not be used for any unlawful or sinful purpose.

If these conditions cannot be fulfilled, or obtaining the license necessarily involves committing actions prohibited by the SharÄĢĘŋah, then it would not be permissible.

Proofs:

Allah the Exalted says:

ÂĢī´ŋŲˆŲŽØĒŲŽØšŲŽØ§ŲˆŲŽŲ†ŲŲˆØ§ ØšŲŽŲ„ŲŽŲ‰ اŲ„Ų’بŲØąŲ‘Ų ŲˆŲŽØ§Ų„ØĒŲ‘ŲŽŲ‚Ų’ŲˆŲŽŲ‰ ŲˆŲŽŲ„ŲŽØ§ ØĒŲŽØšŲŽØ§ŲˆŲŽŲ†ŲŲˆØ§ ØšŲŽŲ„ŲŽŲ‰ اŲ„Ų’ØĨؐØĢؒ؅ؐ ŲˆŲŽØ§Ų„Ų’ØšŲØ¯Ų’ŲˆŲŽØ§Ų†Ųī´žÂģ

(SÅĢrah al-Mā'idah: 2)Âģ

Allah the Exalted also says:

ÂĢ“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity.”

(SÅĢrah al-NÅĢr: 31)Âģ

It is narrated from Usāmah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah īˇē said:

ÂĢÂĢŲ…ا ØĒØąŲƒØĒ بؚدŲŠ ؁ØĒŲ†ØŠ ØŖØļØą ØšŲ„Ų‰ اŲ„ØąØŦاŲ„ Ų…Ų† اŲ„Ų†ØŗØ§ØĄÂģÂģ

ÂĢ“I have not left behind any trial more harmful to men than women.”

(ášĸaá¸ĨÄĢá¸Ĩ al-BukhārÄĢ: 5096; ášĸaá¸ĨÄĢá¸Ĩ Muslim: 2740)Âģ

Therefore, if training for or working as a boat operator or airplane pilot can be carried out while observing the limits set by the SharÄĢĘŋah, then it is permissible in principle. However, if it necessarily entails prohibited matters, those must be avoided.
