Question
Assalamualaikum May Allah bless you Is it permissible to play video games such as god of war, genshin impact, Skyrim? May Allah bless you
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedWalekumussalam,
Jazakallah for your blessings
From an Islamic perspective, the permissibility or impermissibility of any video game does not depend merely on its name; rather, it is determined by its content and its effects. Generally, Islamic jurists have stated that video games may be permissible provided they are free from prohibited elements, such as the promotion of polytheistic or disbelief-based beliefs, indecency and nudity, unlawful music, gambling, encouragement of oppression and brutality, or causing negligence toward religious obligations. If such elements are present, playing those games is not permissible.
As for the games mentioned in the question God of War, Genshin Impact, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim they contain a number of objectionable elements from an Islamic perspective:
God of War is based on Greek and Norse mythology, where various gods, deities, and polytheistic concepts play a central role. It also contains extreme violence, graphic bloodshed, and certain inappropriate scenes.
Genshin Impact includes deity-like beings, magical and supernatural concepts, idol-like statues, immodestly dressed characters, and other elements that are not in harmony with Islamic teachings.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim features magic, fictional religions, deity-like entities, depictions of alcohol consumption, violence, and other impermissible elements that a Muslim should avoid.
Therefore, in light of the above principles, these three games contain content that includes various Islamic concerns and prohibited elements. For this reason, playing them is not considered permissible. Furthermore, such games often consume a significant amount of time and may sometimes lead to neglect of one's religious and worldly responsibilities.
A Muslim should instead seek forms of recreation that are free from prohibited elements and that are beneficial in both religious and worldly matters.
