Can shaytan remove a believerโs faith?
Question
Salam aleykum, i heard stories that are not in quran and sunnah hadith. But my question is, can shaytan through his whispers make a muslim kafir and the muslim accept his whisper and then they die kafir at deathbed? I asked 3 sheikhs, one said he can not because he have mustard seed of imaan and the other agreed with this, then one sheikh said first he can then he agreed with me that shaytan can not because he is protected with the small imaan. I ask this for muslims with weak imaan because i see sinful muslims and get sad for them if they pass away as kafir. I want sources that shaytan can not through his whispers make a muslim who believes in allah kafir. I know he can whisper and etc but does a muslim accept it and then boom he dies as a kafir? Its not logical. What are your view
Islamic Ruling & Answer
VerifiedWalekumussalam,
According to Islamic teachings, the main role of Shaytan is only to whisper, create doubts, and try to misguide people. He cannot forcibly remove a person from faith, nor can he compel someone into disbelief. Faith (iman) and disbelief (kufr) are connected to a personโs own intention, choice, and acceptance. If a person has even a very weak level of faith in their heart, Shaytan can only whisper and create doubts, but he cannot completely force that person into kufr against their will.
This is supported by the well-known hadith in which the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ said that anyone who has even an atomโs weight (or mustard seed equivalent) of faith in their heart will eventually be taken out of Hell. This shows that if true faith exists in the heart, it does not simply disappear, and Allah, out of His mercy, will ultimately grant salvation to such a person. This narration is found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim in different wordings related to intercession (shafaโah) and the minimum level of faith required for salvation.
There is also a hadith in which it is mentioned that Shaytan flows in the human body like blood, meaning he continuously whispers and tries to influence a person. However, his authority is limited only to whispering and suggestions. He cannot take full control of the heart or remove faith by force unless a person himself accepts disbelief willingly.
At the time of death, the final judgment of a personโs faith or disbelief is entirely with Allah, based on His perfect knowledge and justice. The general principle is that a believer, even if sinful, does not suddenly die as a disbeliever just because of Shaytani whispers. Allah keeps firm those of His believing servants who still have faith in their hearts until the end, unless they themselves reject it.
Therefore, the idea that a sinful Muslim can suddenly die as a disbeliever purely due to whispers of Shaytan is not an accurate Islamic concept. Shaytan can whisper and weaken faith, but he cannot forcibly erase it from the heart of a true believer. The ultimate outcome belongs only to Allah, and believers are taught to remain between hope and fear rather than making final judgments about others.
