Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

If it is truly proven and certain that the girl’s mother breastfed you within the first two years of your life, then she becomes your milk mother, and the girl becomes your milk sister. In that case, marriage with her is not allowed (haram).

As for the narration reported from Aisha (RA) about five times of breastfeeding, in the Hanafi school this is not taken as a general rule. Based on the general wording of the Qur’an (“those women who breastfed you”), the principle is that whether  (little) or more—even one time breastfeeding—is enough to establish prohibition.

However, one important point is that a ruling should not be based just on “someone said so” or hearsay. It must be confirmed with certainty whether the breastfeeding actually happened.

If there is any doubt, it is better to consult a reliable Darul Ifta (Islamic legal authority) with full details and get a proper ruling.
