Should a Muslim With Waswas (Religious OCD) See a Psychiatrist?

Question

Is waswas , ocd , can we visit a phycratist if we have waswas . I don't know if I suffer from waswas or not . If someone is saying which i think is kufr and I should not nod to it , the head just nods and I don't think I nodded my head with my will , and I would smile with intending and I would say something kufr without intending , like I don't think while it is coming from my mouth , i would remember , stop it. And then I would stop it , in the middle , I don't remember that I can stop it and sometimes I will think stop stop it and I can't. Should I see a phycratist in this case . Thank you

Islamic Ruling & Answer

Verified

Yes, you can visit a psychiatrist in such a situation; in fact, it is beneficial to do so.

The condition you have described resembles waswas (OCD). In this state, involuntary actions like your head nodding on its own or words coming out of your mouth without intention are not under your control, so there is no sin upon you in Shariah.

Therefore, remain reassured, ignore these thoughts and actions, and consult a doctor for treatment.
